Is It the Router, the ISP, or the Layout? Diagnosing Wi-Fi Problems Before You Buy Anything
A plain-English guide to figuring out what's actually causing weak or unreliable Wi-Fi.
Most Wi-Fi complaints get blamed on the router first, but the router is only one of three likely causes. Before replacing anything, it helps to separate the problem into three questions: is the internet connection itself slow or dropping, is the router or access point placement working against you, or is the building layout creating dead zones no single device can fix?
Start with the internet connection, not the Wi-Fi
Plug a laptop directly into the modem or ONT with an ethernet cable and run a speed test. If the wired speed matches what you're paying for, the problem is downstream of the modem — the router, the access points, or the layout. If the wired speed is already low, no Wi-Fi upgrade will fix it; that's a conversation with the internet provider.
Check placement before you check hardware
A router in a closet, behind a TV, or in a corner of the building is fighting physics before it fights anything else. Wi-Fi signal degrades through walls, metal, and distance. One router in the wrong spot will always underperform two or three access points placed with the floor plan in mind.
Layout problems that hardware alone won't solve
Multi-story homes, homes with detached structures, long narrow offices, and buildings with plaster or metal-lath walls often need more than one access point no matter how good that single router is. This is where a lot of well-intentioned upgrades (mesh kits, range extenders) still underperform — they're solving a placement and coverage problem with more of the same device instead of a proper survey.
When it's worth a professional survey
If you've already confirmed the wired internet speed is fine and you're still seeing dead zones, dropped calls in certain rooms, or devices that randomly disconnect, a site survey (mapping actual signal strength room by room) usually finds the real cause faster than trial-and-error hardware swaps.
