NAS vs. Cloud Backup: What Actually Protects Your Files
Understanding at-rest and in-transit backup before choosing a strategy.
Data backup is the process of copying important files so they can be recovered if something goes wrong — hardware failure, accidental deletion, ransomware, or a disaster at the physical location. Data protection is the broader umbrella: backup and recovery, plus the monitoring, access control, and security measures that reduce the odds you need the backup in the first place.
At-rest backup: a NAS on-site
A Synology NAS or similar on-site device stores backups locally, giving fast recovery speeds and full control over the data. The tradeoff is that anything affecting the building — fire, theft, flooding — can affect the backup too, which is why at-rest backup on its own is rarely the whole answer.
In-transit backup: the cloud
Cloud backup sends copies offsite automatically, which protects against building-level disasters and doesn't depend on someone swapping a drive. The tradeoff is recovery speed: restoring a large amount of data depends on internet speed, and a slow or interrupted connection can turn a quick restore into a long one.
Why most businesses need both
Relying on a single backup method means a single point of failure. Pairing a local NAS for fast day-to-day recovery with an offsite or cloud copy for disaster protection covers the two most common ways backups fail: hardware loss and building-level events.
Three questions worth answering before you buy anything
How long can the business function if a specific file, folder, or server were lost right now?
Has anyone actually tested a restore, or only confirmed that backups are running?
If the building were inaccessible tomorrow, is there a copy of critical files somewhere else?
