Why Your Office Wi-Fi Slows Down Every Afternoon (and How to Fix It)
If your office Wi-Fi feels quick first thing in the morning but crawls by mid-afternoon, you are not imagining it. It is one of the most common complaints we hear from Los Angeles businesses, and it almost always comes down to a handful of fixable causes. Here is what is really happening and how to stop it.
The pattern: fine at 9 a.m., unusable by 2 p.m.
The tell-tale sign is timing. Early in the day, few devices are connected and traffic is light. As the day fills up — laptops, phones, video calls, cloud apps, guest devices, a backup kicking off — the same equipment that coasted at 9 a.m. gets buried. If your network was sized for “a few people checking email,” it runs out of headroom exactly when the office is busiest.
Why it happens
- Too many devices per access point. A consumer router or a single access point can only juggle so many active connections before everyone slows down. Modern offices quietly run three to five devices per person.
- Channel congestion. In dense LA office buildings, your Wi-Fi is competing with every neighbor’s network on the same channels. By afternoon, the airwaves are crowded.
- Consumer-grade gear. Off-the-shelf routers are built for homes, not for sustained business load. They overheat, drop connections, and need constant reboots.
- Wireless interference and dead zones. Microwaves, Bluetooth, thick walls, and metal shelving all degrade signal — so devices cling to a weak connection instead of roaming to a stronger one.
- Internet contention. Sometimes the Wi-Fi is fine and the internet plan itself is saturated once video calls and cloud backups compete for the same pipe.
How we diagnose it
Guessing is expensive. We start with a short assessment: a wireless survey to map real coverage and interference across your space, a look at how many devices each access point is actually carrying, and a check of your internet throughput at peak. That tells us whether the problem is coverage, capacity, interference, the internet plan, or a mix — before anyone spends money on new equipment.
The fix
- Business-grade access points, placed properly. Enough access points to spread the device load, positioned for real coverage rather than wherever the cable happened to reach.
- Wired backhaul. Access points connected by cable, not daisy-chained wirelessly, so coverage does not come at the cost of speed.
- Band steering and roaming. Devices guided onto the right frequency and handed cleanly between access points as people move around.
- Traffic prioritization. Video calls and business apps prioritized over background traffic like large downloads and backups.
- Right-sized internet. If the connection itself is the bottleneck, we look at faster service or failover rather than throwing more Wi-Fi at the problem.
When to get it looked at
If you are rebooting the router to get through the day, if video calls freeze in certain rooms, or if the slowdown is predictable by the clock, it is worth a proper look. These are solvable problems, and the fix is usually far cheaper than the lost productivity.
